Native Garden + Sustainable Landscape Design in Los Angeles, CA

When our clients purchased their home in Los Angeles, the backyard was little more than a blueprint of unfinished ideas — a half-started project overtaken by weeds, abandoned plans, and unrealized potential. But beneath the overgrowth was something worth building: the opportunity to create a meaningful outdoor space rooted in connection, sustainability, and family life.

As first-time parents raising an emerging toddler, they wanted more than a backyard that simply looked nice. Having grown up around farm animals and outdoor living, they dreamed of recreating that sense of grounded, everyday connection within an urban environment. They envisioned a place where their child could experience nature firsthand, where food could be grown steps from the kitchen, and where outdoor living became part of their daily rhythm.

The design was centered around creating a true urban garden experience — one that felt organic, functional, and deeply personal. Raised wood garden beds now overflow with seasonal vegetables and herbs, while espalier apple trees, avocado, lemon, and grapefruit trees bring both beauty and abundance into the space. A custom chicken coop adds charm and purpose, reconnecting the family to slower, more intentional living and creating an experience rarely found in the middle of Los Angeles.

To ground the garden visually and create warmth throughout, natural flagstone with decomposed granite infill was selected for the patio and pathways, giving the backyard an approachable, lived-in feel. A Kurapia lawn alternative softens the space while reducing water use and maintenance, and layered California native planting attracts pollinators that support the surrounding garden ecosystem.

As day transitions into evening, bistro lighting and sconces create a cozy atmosphere that invites outdoor dinners, gardening at sunset, and slow evenings spent together as a family. Drip irrigation was thoughtfully integrated throughout the property to support sustainable gardening and long-term plant health while minimizing waste.

Today, what was once an abandoned and underutilized yard has become a thriving extension of the home — a backyard rooted in nourishment, gathering, and everyday living. More than a remodel, this project became a way for our clients to reconnect with the parts of life that matter most: growing food, raising a family, slowing down, and creating beauty in the middle of the city.
