Understanding the Building Blocks of Your Outdoor Space
Hardscaping
Hardscaping refers to the non-living, structural elements of your outdoor space. Think patios, pathways, driveways, retaining walls, pergolas, outdoor kitchens, and any other built feature that gives your yard shape, function, and flow.

Softscaping
While hardscaping is everything that’s built, softscaping is everything that grows. Think of trees, shrubs, plants, grass, and any vegetation in your outdoor space. We specialize in selecting drought-tolerant, California-native softscaping elements.

Landscaping
Landscaping is simply the combination of hardscaping and softscaping elements. We are licensed landscaping contractors who specialize in design-and-build projects. This means we help design the hardscape and landscape plan for your outdoor space, and bring it to life.

Hardscaping That Feels Like It Belongs There
When most people hear the word hardscaping, they picture concrete. Big flat slabs, wall-to-wall pavers, and a yard that looks more like a parking lot than a place to live. That's far from what we do. The Herencia approach to hardscaping is rooted in natural materials, organic textures, and a design sensibility that honors the California landscape.
The result is hardscaping that doesn't just look good on day one. It feels like it was always meant to be there and gets more beautiful with every passing year.
Hardscaping Projects Across Los Angeles & Orange County
Our signature hardscaping aesthetic lives at the intersection of Mediterranean warmth and California ranch, featuring natural stone, decomposed granite, wood pergolas, and warm organic elements that feel less like a constructed yard and more like a space that was always meant to be there.

A Process as Solid as the Spaces We Build
01
The Discovery Call
Once you submit the form, Alejandra will reach out via email to schedule a short phone discovery call. This is where we get to know you, learn about your space, and make sure we’re the right fit for your project. We’ll ask about your vision, your timeline, and what you’re hoping to create.
02
The On-Site Consultation
If we’re a great fit, the next step is an on-site consultation at your property. Jonathan will come out to walk the space, take measurements, and gather everything needed to put together an accurate proposal for the project. This visit includes a $150 paid consultation fee, which reflects the time, expertise, and intention we bring to every project from day one. If you decide to move forward working together, the $150 consultation fee is credited toward the project cost.
03
The Design
From the on-site visit, we develop a custom design for your space — a detailed plan that brings together your vision, your property’s unique characteristics, and our signature aesthetic. Depending on your needs, we will suggest either a 2D or a 3D design of your outdoor space. You’ll have the opportunity to review, refine, and approve the design before we ever break ground.
04
The Build
Once the design is approved, we get to work on-site! Jonathan leads the build from start to finish, keeping you informed every step of the way through a dedicated project group chat and client portal. We work with focus and intention — one project at a time — so you and your space get the full attention it deserves.
05
The Reveal + Follow-Up
Every project ends with a final walkthrough, brand photos of your finished space, and a one-week check-in to make sure everything is performing and functioning exactly as it should.
The Heart of the Home
This work is meaningful to us because we know how meaningful it is to our clients. It’s an honor to build the patio where you host Sunday dinners, design the pathway your kids have memorized by heart, or create the perfect pergola where you finally exhale after a long week.
None of these moments happens by accident; they happen when hardscaping and softscaping are designed and built together, with intention, as one complete vision.
The best part of your home hasn't been built yet.
Built With Care and Loved By Our Clients
We’re truly honored to create outdoor spaces and backyards that add value to our clients’ properties and their lives.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hardscaping
What is the difference between hardscaping and softscaping?
Hardscaping refers to the built, structural elements of your outdoor space, such as patios, pathways, pergolas, retaining walls, outdoor kitchens, and driveways. Softscaping refers to all the living elements, like plants, trees, grass, and garden beds. The best outdoor spaces integrate both thoughtfully, with hardscaping providing the structure and softscaping bringing it to life.
How long does a hardscaping project take?
Project timelines vary depending on scope and complexity. Most of our projects run between one and four weeks from start to finish. We'll give you a clear timeline during the design phase so you know exactly what to expect before we break ground.
Do I need permits for hardscaping?
Most standard hardscaping projects (patios, pathways, pergolas, and outdoor kitchens with propane) don't require permits. Permits are typically required for significant retaining walls, structures attached to your home, or outdoor kitchens that require the installation of gas or sewer lines. We'll identify any permitting needs during the on-site consultation so there are no surprises.
What materials do you use?
We work primarily with natural materials that complement the California landscape, like decomposed granite, natural flagstone, gravel, natural stone, and wood. When concrete and pavers are the right choice for a specific application, we use them intentionally and in proportion. Every material recommendation is made with your aesthetic, your budget, and the long-term performance of your space in mind.
Can hardscaping be added to an existing landscape?
Absolutely! And it's one of the most common projects we take on. Whether you have an existing garden that needs a pathway, a backyard that needs a patio, or a front entry that needs a complete refresh, we can design and build hardscaping elements that integrate beautifully with what's already there.
Does hardscaping add value to my home?
Yes, it adds significant value! Well-designed hardscaping is consistently cited as one of the highest-return outdoor investments a homeowner can make. A beautifully designed patio, outdoor kitchen, or front entry doesn't just improve how you live in your home today; it increases its market value and curb appeal for years to come. And in a market like Los Angeles and Orange County, where outdoor living is part of everyday life, that value is even more pronounced.
