Front Yard Renovation in Atwater Village, CA, CA
The home had just been beautifully renovated, but the front yard still felt like the past. It didn’t reflect the investment, the care, or the feeling the home now held.
Beyond aesthetics, there were real challenges: limited driveway space, lack of privacy, street noise, and water pooling near the foundations (something that needed to be addressed thoughtfully, not just covered up).
Our approach was to solve these problems in a way that felt natural, cohesive, and effortless.
We started by reshaping the land, correcting the grade, and introducing a drainage system that moves water away from the home. A dry creek bed now captures and slows runoff, turning what was once a concern into a feature that adds movement, texture, and purpose. A rain chain replaces a traditional gutter downspout, guiding water in a way that feels intentional rather than intrusive.
From there, we focused on how the space is experienced.
A widened driveway creates just enough room for comfortable daily use—something small that makes a big difference. A defined pathway of natural tan flagstone leads from the driveway to the front door, set within California Gold gravel for warmth and contrast. The path feels grounded, guiding you in without overcomplicating the space.
Planting was layered with both function and beauty in mind. California native and drought-tolerant plants create a low-maintenance landscape that thrives in our climate, while Ceanothus ‘Concha’ Blue and Carpenteria ‘Elizabeth’ form soft privacy screens around the main windows—bringing both quiet and enclosure without feeling closed off.
As the sun sets, the lighting brings everything together. Subtle path lights guide movement, while uplighting highlights the multi-trunk Arbutus ‘Marina,’ giving the home a quiet presence at night.
What was once disconnected is now cohesive. What once had issues now works seamlessly.
And most importantly, this home now feels complete from the moment you arrive.
