A Modern Mediterranean Backyard in La Cañada Flintridge

What was once a small, unusually shaped backyard is now the space this family returns to every day.

When our clients came to us, the yard felt disconnected and difficult to use. It didn’t reflect how they wanted to live: relaxing at the end of the day, playing with their young child and new puppy, and hosting friends.

Their goal was to create a space that felt like an extension of their home.

We began by clearing the yard, removing existing vegetation and earlier features of the space that no longer supported their vision, while reworking the grade to resolve drainage concerns and move water away from the home.

From there, the layout was reshaped to support everyday living.

A pergola anchors the space, creating a defined outdoor room for lounging, gathering, and unwinding. A relocated fire pit and soft overhead lighting set the tone for slow evenings, while a natural stone urn fountain adds a subtle, calming presence.

Concrete step stones set within Del Rio pea gravel guide movement through the yard, connecting each area with intention. A smaller, efficient lawn provides space for play without overwhelming the design.

Planting was layered with California native and drought-tolerant species, bringing texture, movement, and seasonal color while remaining low-maintenance. Single trunk Arbutus ‘Marina’ trees frame the pergola, while a Palo Verde, Manzanita, and lemon tree add character and a sense of life to the space.

As the sun sets, layered lighting: path lights, uplights, and dimmable string lights transform the yard into a warm, inviting retreat.

What was once overlooked is now where life happens, a backyard designed not just to look beautiful, but to be lived in.
